Tuesday, the Dow fell 231.86 points (0.62%) to close at 37,361.12, the Nasdaq fell 28.41 points (0.19%) to close at 14,944.35 and the S&P 500 fell 17.85 points (0.43%) to close at 4,765.98. The Russell 2000 lost 23.66 points (1.21%) to close at 1,927.30, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index lost 220.78 points (0.46%) to close at 48,019.37.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.063%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 2 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.294%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1893, acting for Hawaiian sugar interests and their American allies, a committee led by Sanford Ballard Dole deposed Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani and installed a provisional government with Dole as president. In 1899, gangster Al Capone was born in Brooklyn, New York. In 1917, the U.S. purchased three of the Virgin Islands—St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix—from Denmark for $25 million. In 1922, actress Betty White, best known for her comedic work on numerous television shows, was born in Oak Park, Illinois. In 1942, professional boxer Cassius Clay, who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali, was born in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1943, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt met at Casablanca, Morocco. In 1961, in his Farewell Address, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned that the U.S. must “guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence… by the military-industrial complex”; he felt that if left unchecked, it could undermine American democracy. In 1977, murderer Gary Gilmore was executed in Utah, ending a de facto nationwide moratorium on capital punishment that had lasted nearly 10 years. In 1991, Harald V became king of Norway following the death of his father, Olav V. In 1995, a large-scale earthquake struck the Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area of Japan, killing an estimated 6,400 people and causing major damage. In 2008, chess player Bobby Fischer, who became the youngest grandmaster in history when he achieved the title in 1958, at age 15.5, died at age 64 in Reykjavik, Iceland.
