Existing-home sales grew in December, bouncing back after a slight fall in November, according to the National Association of Realtors. Although the Midwest saw sales decline, the other three major U.S. regions reported meaningful growth last month. Total existing-home sales, completed transactions that include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops, increased 3.6% from November to a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 5.54 million in December. Additionally, overall sales took a significant bounce, up 10.8% from a year ago (5.00 million in December 2018).

Wednesday, the Dow was down 9.77 points (0.03%) at 29,186.27, the NASDAQ increased 12.96 points (0.14%) to 9,383.77, and the S&P 500 was virtually unchanged at 3,321.75. The Russell 2000 slipped 1.44 points (0.09%) to 1,684.46, and the Wilshire 5000 was up 11.07 points (0.03%) at 33,828.66.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, with its yield at 1.769%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was up 4/32, decreasing its yield to 2.220%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1789, Georgetown College was established as the first Catholic college in the U.S. The school is in Washington, D.C. In 1845, Congress decided all national elections would be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. In 1907, Charles Curtis, of Kansas, began serving in the United States Senate—the first American Indian to become a U.S. Senator. In 1943, Duke Ellington and the band played for a black-tie crowd at Carnegie Hall in New York City for the first time. In 1957, machines at the Wham-O toy company rolled out the first batch of Frisbees. In 1964, ratification of the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which eliminated the poll tax in federal elections, was completed. In 1971, in Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska, the lowest temperature ever recorded in the U.S. was reported as minus 80 degrees. In 1973, President Richard Nixon announced that an accord had been reached to end the Vietnam War. In 1978, Sweden banned aerosol sprays because of damage to environment. They were the first country to do so. In 1989, surrealist artist Salvador Dali died in Spain at age 84.
