Tuesday, the Dow gained 104.4 points (0.31%) to close at 33,733.96, the Nasdaq fell 30.14 points (0.27%) to close at 11,334.27 and the S&P 500 fell 2.86 points (0.07%) to close at 4,016.95. The Russell 2000 fell 5.16 points (0.27%) to close at 1,885.61 and the Wilshire 5000 dropped 48.84 points (0.12%) to close at 40,039.54.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note decreased 2/32, bringing the yield to 3.460%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond fell 3/32, bringing the yield to 3.608%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1776, the Continental Congress authorized the first national Revolutionary War memorial in honor of Brigadier General Richard Montgomery, who died during an assault on Quebec in 1775. In 1905, at the Premier Mine in Pretoria, South Africa, a 3,106-carat diamond was discovered during a routine inspection by the mine’s superintendent. Weighing 1.33 pounds, and christened the “Cullinan,” it is the largest diamond ever found. In 1949, the first Emmy Awards were presented; there were only six categories, and nominated shows were limited to those that aired in the Los Angeles area. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy became the first president to hold a live televised news conference. In 1971, criminal and cult leader Charles Manson and three of his followers were convicted of a series of notorious murders; their crimes inspired the best-selling book “Helter Skelter.” In 1972, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm announced her presidential bid: she was the first major-party African American candidate for president and the first woman to run for the Democratic nomination. In 2017, actress Mary Tyler Moore, who helped redefine the portrayal of women on TV with her roles in the comedies “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died in Greenwich, Connecticut.
