Wednesday, the Dow fell 99.06 points (0.26%) to close at 37,806.39, the Nasdaq rose 55.98 points (0.36%) to close at 15,481.92 and the S&P 500 rose 3.95 points (0.08%) to close at 4,868.55. The Russell 2000 lost 14.40 points (0.73%) to close at 1,961.86, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index lost 17.18 points (0.04%) to close at 49,007.05.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 4/32, bringing the yield 4.182%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 30/32, bringing the yield to 4.412%.

In plan sponsor discussions about retirement plan participants’ benefits, the tendency is to consider all participants as a homogenous group. Yet, when delving into data such as the 2023 PLANSPONSOR Participant Survey—which had 971 full- and part-time employee respondents who currently participate in an employer defined contribution plan—the group’s diversity becomes more clear.

ON THIS DATE: In 1882, British writer Virginia Woolf, who made an original contribution to the form of the novel and was one of the most distinguished of her time, was born in London. In 1945, in an effort to prevent tooth decay, Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first U.S. city to add fluoride to its water system. In 1949, the first Emmy Awards were presented; there were only six categories, and nominated shows were limited to those that aired in the Los Angeles area. In 1961, the animated film “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” was released in the U.S., and it became a Disney classic, especially noted for the villainous character Cruella De Vil. Johnson—who wielded great influence in American architectural design, playing a defining role in several 20th-century movements—died in Connecticut. In 2017, actress Mary Tyler Moore, who helped redefine the portrayal of women on TV with her roles in the comedies “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” died in Connecticut.
