Finding Money to Save for Retirement Is a Struggle
Only 37% of Americans report they can live comfortably and save an adequate amount for retirement or other needs, according to the Allstate and National Journal Heartland Monitor Poll findings. Nearly half (46%) say they can get by every month but find it difficult to save and invest. Nearly one-third (32%) of survey respondents report that in the past 12 months, they have withdrawn money from savings or pension funds to make ends meet.Read more >

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had increased in December, improved moderately in January. The Index now stands at 98.1 (1985=100), up from 96.3 in December. The Present Situation Index was unchanged at 116.4, while the Expectations Index increased from 83.0 to 85.9 in January.

U.S. stock indices closed sharply higher as the price of crude oil made another sudden turn, the Associated Press reports. The Dow climbed 282.01 points (1.78%) to 16,167.23, the NASDAQ closed 49.18 points (1.09%) higher at 4,567.67, and the S&P 500 was up 26.53 points (1.41%) at 1,903.61. The Russell 2000 increased 20.60 points (2.07%) to 1,017.97, and the Wilshire 5000 gained 294.80 points (1.54%) to finish at 19,446.37.

On the NYSE, 3.1 billion shares changed hands, with advancing issues outnumbering declining issues more than 5 to 1. On the NASDAQ, 2.7 billion shares traded, with a more than 2 to 1 lead for advancers.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 1/32, decreasing its yield to 2.003%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was down 3/32, increasing its yield to 2.790%.
