Sales of new single‐family houses in December were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 694,000, according to estimates released jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 0.4% below the revised November rate of 697,000, but is 23.0% above the December 2018 estimate of 564,000. An estimated 681,000 new homes were sold in 2019. This is 10.3% above the 2018 figure of 617,000.

Yesterday, the Dow fell 453.93 points (1.57%) to 28,535.80, the NASDAQ shed 175.60 points (1.89%) to finish at 9,139.31, and the S&P 500 closed 51.84 points (1.57%) lower at 3,243.63. The Russell 2000 dropped 40.87 points (2.43%) to 1,644.14, and the Wilshire 5000 plunged 510.78 points (1.52%) to 33,028.77.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 30/32, bringing its yield down to 1.599%. The price of the 30-year Treasury note climbed 1 31/32, decreasing its yield to 2.051%.
