New orders for manufactured durable goods in December increased $0.4 billion or 0.2% to $245.3 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This increase, up eight consecutive months, followed a 1.2% November increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.7%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.5%. Machinery, also up eight consecutive months, drove the increase, $0.8 billion or 2.4% to $33.2 billion.

Wednesday, the Dow lost 633.87 points (2.05%) to finish at 30,303.17, the NASDAQ closed 355.47 points (2.61%) lower at 13,270.60, and the S&P 500 decreased 98.85 points (2.57%) to 3,750.77. The Russell 2000 was down 41.16 points (1.91%) at 2,108.70, and the Wilshire 5000 fell 1,011.83 points (2.48%) to 39,790.28.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 3/32, decreasing its yield to 1.013%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 5/32, bringing its yield down to 1.773%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1878, the first telephone switchboard was installed in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1878, “The Yale News” was published for the first time. It was the first, daily, collegiate newspaper in the U.S. In 1902, the Carnegie Institution was established in Washington, D.C. It began with a gift of $10 million from Andrew Carnegie. In 1916, Louis D. Brandeis was appointed by President Wilson to the U.S. Supreme Court, becoming its first Jewish member. In 1922, the National Football League (NFL) franchise in Decatur, Illinois, transferred to Chicago. The team took the name Chicago Bears. In 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded after liftoff. Christa McAuliffe, a 37-year-old high school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, was among the seven-member crew. In 1997, Clive Davis received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
