Tuesday, the Conference Board will report the Consumer Confidence Index for January. Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week. Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will report the unemployment rate for January and the Census Bureau will report factory orders for December.

Friday, the Dow rose 60.30 points (0.16%) to close at 38,109.43, the Nasdaq fell 55.13 points (0.36%) to close at 15,455.36 and the S&P 500 fell 3.19 points (0.07%) to close at 4,890.97. The Russell 2000 rose 2.45 points (0.12%) to close at 1,978.33, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 12.15 points (0.025%) to close at 49,249.17.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 24/32, bringing the yield to 4.143%. The 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.372%.
For the week ending January 26, the Dow rose 0.65%, the Nasdaq rose 0.94% and the S&P 500 rose 1.06%. The Russell 2000 rose 1.75%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 1.07% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1886, German mechanical engineer Karl Benz patented the first practical automobile powered by an internal-combustion engine. In 1900, the American League of Professional Baseball Clubs was organized in Philadelphia. In 1919, the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that established prohibition on alcohol was ratified and went into effect the following year. In 1924, the first machine for rolling ice cream cones was patented by Carl Rutherford Taylor of Cleveland. In 1936, Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb were among the first players to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. In 1964, the British film “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” a landmark Cold War farce directed by Stanley Kubrick, was released in theatres. In 1966, Brazilian soccer player Romário, one of the most prolific goal scorers in the sport’s history, was born in Rio de Janeiro. In 2002, President George W. Bush, delivering a State of the Union address, described Iraq, Iran and North Korea as an “axis of evil” for their attempts to develop nuclear, chemical or biological weaponry. In 2004, author Janet Frame, who created a unique body of work that presents perhaps the most-recognized voice of New Zealand to those outside her native country, died at age 79. In 2015, Australian novelist Colleen McCullough, best known for her sweeping romance “The Thorn Birds” and for the “Masters of Rome series,” died at age 77.
