Construction spending during November 2023 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2,050.1 billion, 0.4% above the revised October estimate of $2,042.5 billion, the Census Bureau reported. The November figure is 11.3% above the November 2022 estimate of $1,842.2 billion. During the first 11 months of this year, construction spending amounted to $1,817.1 billion, 6.2% above the $1,711.1 billion for the same period in 2022.

Tuesday, the Dow rose 25.50 points (0.07%) to close at 37,715.04, the Nasdaq fell 245.41 points (1.63%) to close at 14,765.94 and the S&P 500 fell 27.00 points (0.57%) to close at 4,742.83. The Russell 2000 lost 14.28 points (0.70%) to close at 2,012.80, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 309.33 points (0.64%) to close at 47,986.05.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 27/32, bringing the yield to 3.937%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.083%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1521, Pope Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther, the German priest whose questioning of certain Roman Catholic practices initiated the Protestant Reformation. In 1938, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the National Foundation of Infantile Paralysis (later called the March of Dimes) to find a cure for polio, a disease he had been stricken with in 1921. In 1939, Canadian professional ice hockey player Bobby Hull, the “Golden Jet,” was born. In 1959, Alaska became the 49th U.S. state. In 1962, Pope John XXII excommunicated Fidel Castro, who had transformed Cuba into a communist state; at the time, the Roman Catholic Church opposed communism. In 1977, Apple Inc. was incorporated by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak; it has become one of the most valuable companies in the world, known for innovative computer and electronic products. In 1990, after undergoing 10 days of psychological warfare—which included U.S. forces blasting rock music at the Vatican embassy, where he had sought refuge—Panamanian military leader Manuel Noriega surrendered to U.S. troops in Panama City. In 2001, Hillary Clinton was sworn in as a U.S. senator from New York, having become the first first lady in U.S. history to win elective office. In 2004, NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit landed on Mars to study the chemical and physical composition of the planet’s surface.
