Wednesday, the Federal Reserve’s FOMC issued a statement maintaining the target range for the federal funds rate unchanged at 4.25 to 4.5%.

Wednesday, the Dow fell 136.83 points (0.31%) to close at 44,713.52, the Nasdaq fell 101.26 points (0.51%) to close at 19,632.32 and the S&P 500 fell 28.39 points (0.47%) to close at 6,039.31. The Russell 2000 fell 5.77 points (0.25%) to close at 2,283.10, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 264.88 points (0.43%) to close at 60,716.25.

The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.534%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.779%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1912, Barbara Tuchman, one of the foremost popular historians in the U.S. in the second half of the 20th century and a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, was born. In 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg named Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany. In 1945, the greatest maritime disaster in history occurred as the German ocean liner Wilhelm Gustloff was sunk by a Soviet submarine, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 9,000 people. In 1948, Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi—considered the father of his country and internationally esteemed for his doctrine of nonviolent protest to achieve political and social progress—was assassinated. In 1972, a demonstration by Roman Catholic civil rights supporters in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, turned violent when British paratroopers opened fire, killing 13 and injuring 14 others (one of the injured later died); Bloody Sunday, as it became known, precipitated a surge in support for the Irish Republican Army. In 2011, California became the first state to celebrate Fred Korematsu Day, which honored the Japanese American activist who was convicted in 1942 of violating an exclusion order requiring him to relocate; his subsequent legal appeals were denied.
