HDHPs Appeal to Millennials and Higher-Income Employees
There is a continued shift toward consumer-directed health care, with the rate of employers offering at least one high-deductible health plan (HDHP) increasing more than 20% since 2016, according to Benefitfocus’ third annual “State of Employee Benefits” report. According to the report, there is mounting evidence that HDHPs are more appealing to employees with higher incomes, and Millennials selected HDHPs at more than twice the rate of the most senior members of the workforce. The analysis also finds Millennials were especially eager to adopt health savings accounts (HSAs), nearly doubling their HSA participation from 2017. Read more >

John Hancock Creates Financial Wellness Tool
After its Financial Stress Survey found that 66% of respondents suffering moderate to extreme stress blamed it on their finances, John Hancock Retirement Plan Services created a new financial wellness tool to de-stress and engage plan participants. The Financial Wellness Assessment—which, according to John Hancock, will be free to all of its plans—provides tips on budgeting, debt management, saving, investing and other areas of personal finance that can be stressful. Economic Events

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index increased in January, following a decline in December. The Index now stands at 125.4 (1985=100), up from 123.1 in December. The Present Situation Index decreased slightly, from 156.5 to 155.3, while the Expectations Index increased from 100.8 last month to 105.5 this month.

Market Mirror

Tuesday, the Dow fell 362.59 points (1.37%) to 26,076.89, the NASDAQ closed 64.02 points (0.86%) lower at 7,402.48, and the S&P 500 decreased 31.10 points (1.09%) to 2,822.43. The Russell 2000 was down 15.29 points (0.96%) at 1,582.82, and the Wilshire 5000 lost 296.25 points (1.00%) to finish at 29,254.84.

 

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 6/32, increasing its yield to 2.716%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 17/32, bringing its yield up to 2.971%.
