In the week ending December 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 787,000, a decrease of 19,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 806,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 836,750, an increase of 17,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 819,000.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.67% for the week ending December 31, up slightly from last week when it averaged 2.66%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.72%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.17%, down from last week when it averaged 2.19%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 3.16%.
Today, the Census Bureau will report about construction spending for November. Wednesday, the Census Bureau will report about factory orders for November. Thursday, the Labor Department will release its initial claims report. Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will reveal the unemployment rate for December, and the Census Bureau will report about wholesale trade for November.

Thursday, the Dow gained 196.92 points (0.65%) to finish at 30,606.48, the NASDAQ was up 18.28 points (0.14%) at 12,888.28, and the S&P 500 closed 24.03 points (0.64%) higher at 3,756.07. The Russell 2000 fell 29.09 points (1.45%) to 1,974.86, and the Wilshire 5000 increased 155.39 points (0.40%) to 39,456.63.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 1/32, decreasing its yield to 0.919%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 2/32, bringing its yield down to 1.649%.
For the week ending December 31, the Dow finished 1.35% higher, the NASDAQ was up 0.65%, and the S&P 500 gained 1.43%. The Russell 2000 fell 1.45%, and the Wilshire 5000 increased 0.72%.
