Wednesday, the Dow increased 133.40 points (0.40%) to close at 33,269.77, the Nasdaq increased 71.78 points (0.69%) to close at 10,458.76 and the S&P 500 gained 28.83 points (0.75%) to close at 3,852.97. The Russell 2000 gained 21.81 points (1.25%) to end trading at 1,772.54 and the Wilshire 5000 gained 309.24 points (0.82%) to close at 38,209.49.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 5/32, bringing the yield to 3.686%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 30/32, bringing the yield to 3.800%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1643, in the first record of a legal divorce in the American colonies, Anne Clarke of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was granted a divorce from her absent and adulterous husband, Denis Clarke, by the Quarter Court of Boston, Massachusetts. In 1869, Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones (known as Sissieretta Jones), an opera singer, was born. At age 23, she became the first African American performer to appear at the venue that became known as Carnegie Hall. In 1920, the New York Yankees announced the team purchased Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox for $125,000. In 1925, Nellie Tayloe Ross was sworn in as governor of Wyoming. She was the first woman governor in the United States. In 1931, dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey, Jr., was born in Rogers, Texas. In 1933, construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. In 1980, the Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” became hip-hop’s first Top 40 hit.
