Monday, the Dow fell 25.57 points (0.06%) to close at 42,706.56, the Nasdaq rose 243.30 points (1.24%) to close at 19,864.98 and the S&P 500 rose 32.91 points (0.55%) to close at 5,975.38. The Russell 2000 fell 1.83 points (0.08%) to close at 2,266.65, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 317.34 points (0.53%) to close at 59,977.01.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 24/32, bringing the yield to 4.636%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 29/32, bringing the yield to 4.858%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1957, broadcast journalist Katie Couric, the first solo female anchor of a major network (CBS) evening news program, was born. In 1968, uncrewed U.S. space probe Surveyor 7 was launched and, a few days later, made a soft landing on the Moon. In 1979, Vietnamese forces took control of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, ousting the Khmer Rouge and its leader, Pol Pot. In 2001, John Kufuor was inaugurated as president of Ghana in the country’s first peaceful transition from one elected government to another. In 2003, by presidential decree, Christmas was celebrated for the first time as a national holiday in Egypt, an almost entirely Muslim country. In 2015, two gunmen connected to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a Yemini-based militant group, stormed the Paris offices of “Charlie Hebdo” and killed 12 people in retribution for the satirical magazine’s portrayals of the Prophet Muhammad; the attackers were later killed by police.
