Wednesday, the Dow gained 210.22 points (0.61%) to finish at 34,502.51, the Nasdaq decreased 24.38 points (0.17%) to 14,503.95, and the S&P 500 increased 5.70 points (0.13%) to 4,297.50. The Russell 2000 was up 1.71 points (0.07%) at 2,310.55, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 19.01 points (0.04%) higher at 45,113.91.
The prices of the 10-year Treasury note and 30-year Treasury bond were each up 1/32, decreasing their yields to 1.466% and 2.082%, respectively.

ON THIS DATE: In 1862, Congress established the Bureau of Internal Revenue. In 1863, during the U.S. Civil War, the first day’s fighting at Gettysburg began. In 1874, the Philadelphia Zoological Society opened the first zoo in the United States. In 1905, the USDA Forest Service was created within the Department of Agriculture. The agency was given the mission to sustain healthy, diverse, and productive forests and grasslands for present and future generations. In 1934, the Federal Communications Commission replaced the Federal Radio Commission as the regulator of broadcasting in the United States. In 1941, Bulova Watch Company sponsored the first TV commercial in New York City. In 1943, the U.S. Government began automatically withholding federal income tax from paychecks. In 1950, American ground troops arrived in South Korea to stem the tide of the advancing North Korean army. In 1963, the U.S. postmaster introduced the five-digit ZIP (Zoning Improvement Plan) code. In 1966, the Medicare federal insurance program went into effect. In 1979, the first Sony Walkman went on sale. In 1984, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which oversees the voluntary rating system for movies, introduced a new rating, PG-13. In 1987, John Kevin Hill, at age 11, became the youngest to fly across the U.S. when he landed at National Airport in Washington, D.C.
