May sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $503.4 billion, up 0.1% from the revised April level and up 0.4% from the May 2018 level, the Census Bureau reported. The March to April percent change was unrevised from the preliminary estimate of down 0.4%.

Wednesday, the Dow increased 76.71 points (0.29%) to 26,860.20, the NASDAQ climbed 60.80 points (0.75%) to 8,202.53, and the S&P 500 gained 13.44 points (0.45%) to finish at 2,993.07. The Russell 2000 was up 2.46 points (0.16%) at 1,565.05, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 130.69 points (0.43%) higher at 30,785.62.


The price of the 10-year Treasury note was virtually unchanged, with its yield at 2.065%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 9/32, bringing its yield up to 2.583%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1798, the U.S. Marine Corps was formally re-established by “An Act for Establishing a Marine Corps” passed by Congress. The act also created the U.S. Marine Band. In 1804, the United States’ first secretary of the treasury, Alexander Hamilton, was killed by Vice President Aaron Burr in a duel. In 1914, Babe Ruth debuted in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox. In 1955, the U.S. Air Force Academy was dedicated in Colorado at Lowry Air Base.
