Thursday, the Dow increased 162.06 points (0.51%) to 32,036.90, the Nasdaq climbed 161.96 points (1.36%) to 12,059.61, and the S&P 500 gained 39.05 points (0.99%) to finish at 3,998.95. The Russell 2000 was up 8.74 points (0.48%) at 1,836.69, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 371.37 points (0.94%) higher at 39.927.62.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 1 2/32, bringing its yield down to 2.886%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond climbed 2 2/32, decreasing its yield to 3.046%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1926, Babe Ruth caught a baseball at Mitchell Field in New York that had been dropped from an airplane flying at 250 feet. In 1933, American aviator Wiley Post returned to Floyd Bennett Field in New York, having flown solo around the world in 7 days, 18 hours, and 49 minutes. He was the first aviator to accomplish the feat. In 1934, outside Chicago’s Biograph Theatre, notorious criminal John Dillinger—America’s “Public Enemy No. 1″—was killed in a hail of bullets fired by federal agents.
