Wednesday, the Dow fell 504.22 points (1.25%) to close at 39,853.87, the Nasdaq fell 654.94 points (3.64%) to close at 17,342.41, the S&P 500 fell 128.61 points (2.31%) to close at 5,427.13. The Russell 2000 fell 47.89 points (2.13%) to close at 2,195.37, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 1,304.03 points (2.34%) to close at 54,402.73.The 10-year Treasury note decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.2880%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.542%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1814, near Niagara Falls, British troops commanded by General Phineas Riall thwarted an invasion of British Canada by a U.S. force under General Jacob Brown in the Battle of Lundy’s Lane during the War of 1812. In 1832, the first recorded railroad accident in U.S. history occurred when four people were thrown off a car on the Granite Railway near Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1868, Congress formed the Wyoming Territory. In 1898, U.S. forces under General Nelson A. Miles invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish-American War. In 1952, Puerto Rico attained its own government as a commonwealth of the United States. In 1978, Louise Brown, the first human conceived using in vitro fertilization, was born in England. In 1984, Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Yevgenyevna Savitskaya became the first woman to walk in space. In 2000, a Concorde supersonic airplane—Air France Flight 4590—crashed outside Paris, killing all 109 people on board and four others on the ground; the event was believed to have hastened the end of all Concorde operations three years later. In 2007, Indian lawyer and politician Pratibha Patil was sworn in as president of India, becoming the first woman to hold the office.
