Yesterday, the Dow was up 28.90 points (0.11%) at 27,221.35, the NASDAQ closed 36.88 points (0.44%) lower at 8,293.33, and the S&P 500 was down 4.89 points (0.16%) at 3,020.97. The Russell 2000 decreased 9.94 points (0.63%) to 1,569.03, and the Wilshire 5000 lost 99.88 points (0.32%) to finish at 31,046.63. The prices of the 10-year Treasury note and 30-year Treasury bond were up 1/32, decreasing their yields to 2.066% and 2.592%, respectively. |

ON THIS DATE: In 1619, the first representative assembly in America convened in Jamestown, Virginia. In 1942, the WAVES were created by legislation signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The members of the Women’s Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service were a part of the U.S. Navy. In 1945, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship had just delivered key components of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. Only 316 out of 1,196 men aboard survived the attack. In 1956, the phrase “In God We Trust” was adopted as the U.S. national motto. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed into law Social Security Act that established Medicare and Medicaid. In 1974, the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted to impeach President Richard Nixon for blocking the Watergate investigation and for abuse of power. |
