Wednesday, the Dow increased 69.86 points (0.23%) to 31,037.68, the Nasdaq gained 39.61 points (0.35%) to 11,361.85 and the S&P 500 climbed 13.69 points (0.36%) to close at 3,845.08. The Russell 2000 slipped 13.78 points (0.79%) to 1,727.55 and the Wilshire 5000 extended 52.88 points (0.14%) to 38,220.61.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note decreased 1 1/32, increasing its yield to 2.932%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was down 1 8/32, increasing its yield to 3.134%.

Pace of Retirees Returning to Work Increases

A new report shows older workers’ wages are rising at the same time that more retired people are returning to work, but the gains are not necessarily sufficient to outpace rising prices.

ON THIS DATE: In 1754, Kings College, later renamed Columbia College, was opened in New York City. In 1846, the U.S. annexation of California was proclaimed at Monterey after the surrender of a Mexican garrison. In 1861, Nettie Stevens, the biologist who discovered X and Y sex chromosomes, was born. In 1928, in Chillicothe, Missouri, pre-sliced bread first went on sale; the loaves, baked by a local company, were cut using a machine designed by Otto Rohwedder. In 1930, construction began on the Boulder Dam, later renamed the Hoover Dam, on the Colorado River. In 1976, for the first time in history, women were enrolled into the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’Connor, an Arizona Court of Appeals judge, to be the first female Supreme Court justice in U.S. history. In 2005, the London transit system was struck by coordinated suicide bomb attacks that killed 39 people and injured more than 700. In 2019, led by Megan Rapinoe, the U.S. women’s soccer team defeated the Netherlands to win its fourth World Cup.
