Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.30% for the week ending July 7, down for last week when it averaged 5.70%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 2.90%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 4.45%, down from last week when it averaged 4.83%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.20%.

In the week ending July 2, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 235,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 231,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 232,500, an increase of 750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 231,750.
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday, the Dow gained 346.87 points (1.12%) to 31,384.55, the Nasdaq was up 259.49 points (2.28%) to 11,621.35 and the S&P 500 increased 57.64 points (1.50%) to close at 3,902.62. The Russell 2000 climbed 42.06 points (2.43%) to 1,769.60 and the Wilshire 5000 boosted 663.99 points (1.74%) to 38,884.58.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note fell 28/32, bringing its yield up to 3.002%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 24/32, raising its yield up to 3.190%.
