Small Talk
ON THIS DATE: In 1868, Louisiana and South Carolina were the last states to ratify the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States—including former enslaved people—and guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.” In 1872, the doughnut cutter was patented by John F. Blondel. In 1877, Alexander Graham Bell, Gardiner Greene Hubbard, Thomas Sanders and Thomas Watson formed the Bell Telephone Company. In 1922, Johnny Weissmuller became the first person to swim the 100 meters freestyle in less than a minute. In 1951, President Harry Truman asked Congress to formally end the state of war between the United States and Germany. In 1971, the United States turned over complete responsibility of the Demilitarized Zone to South Vietnamese units. In 2005, Danny Way, a daredevil skateboarder, rolled down a large ramp and jumped across the Great Wall of China. He was the first person to clear the wall without motorized aid.

And now it’s time for some FRIDAY FUN!
A homemade fair ride.

In Tokyo, Japan, a display designed to draw attention to new billboard advertising space shows a very realistic 3D image of a cat.

In Brokhus, Denmark, a team of 30 sculpters used more than 5,000 tons of sand to build what is believed to be the world’s tallest sandcastle, standing 69.4 feet high.

Have a wonderful weekend!
