Monday, the Dow fell 31.08 points (0.08%) to close at 39,344.79, the Nasdaq rose 50.98 points (0.28%) to close at 18,403.74 and the S&P 500 rose 5.66 points (0.10%) to close at 5,572.85. The Russell 2000 rose 11.94 points (0.59%) to close at 2,038.67, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 70.20 points (0.13%) to close at 55,461.74.

The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged 0/32, bringing the yield to 4.282%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.465%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1762, Catherine the Great overthrew Peter III and began her reign as empress of Russia, leading her country into full participation in the political and cultural life of Europe and extending Russian territory. In 1816, the Congress of Tucumán—an assembly that met in the city of Tucumán (now San Miguel de Tucumán) declared Argentina’s independence from Spain. In 1850, Zachary Taylor, 12th president of the U.S., died 16 months after taking office. In 1856, Nikola Tesla—inventor, researcher and discoverer of the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery—was born in Smiljan, Croatia. In 1956, actor Tom Hanks was born in Concord, California. In 1960, the Thresher, the first of a class of U.S. nuclear-powered attack submarines, was launched; it sank in 1963 in the worst submarine accident in history.
