Monday, the Dow rose 69.05 points (0.18%) to close at 38,868.04, the Nasdaq rose 59.40 points (0.35%) to close at 17,192.53 and the S&P 500 rose 13.80 points (0.26%) to close at 5,360.79. The Russell 2000 rose 5.06 points (0.25%) to close at 2,031.61, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 151.557points (0.28%) to close at 53,527.88. 

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.473%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.598%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1880, politician Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to be a member of the U.S. Congress, serving in the years 1917 to 1919, and 1941 to 1943, was born near Missoula, Montana. In 1898, the Guangxu emperor of China issued his first reform decree initiating the Hundred Days of Reform, an imperial attempt at renovating the Chinese state and social system. In 1919, with his victory in the Belmont Stakes, Sir Barton became the first winner of the Triple Crown of American horse racing. In 1950, capping a dramatic recovery from a near-fatal automobile accident, golfer Ben Hogan won the U.S. Open. In 1982, Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” was released in theatres, and it is widely seen as a classic of American cinema. In 2001, Timothy McVeigh—convicted of the bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, which killed 168 people—was executed. McVeigh was 33 years old. In 2002, the reality competition TV series ”American Idol,” debuted, and it became one of the most watched shows in the U.S. In 2010, the 19th World Cup football tournament opened in the host country of South Africa, marking the first time that the event was played on the African continent; Spain won the tournament. In 2014, actor and activist Ruby Dee died at age 91.
