In the week ending June 7, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 248,000, unchanged from the previous week’s revised level that rose 1,000 to 248,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 240,250, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 235,250.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage 6.84% as of June 12, down slightly from last week when it averaged 6.85%. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.95%, Freddie Mac reported. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.97%, down from last week when it averaged 5.99%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.17%.

Thursday the Dow rose 101.85 points (0.24%) to close at 42,967.62, the Nasdaq rose 46.61 points (0.24%) to close at 19,662.49 and the S&P 500 rose 23.02 points (0.38%) to close at 6,045.26. The Russell 2000 fell 8.14 points (0.38%) to close at 2,140.09, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 177.28 points (0.29%) to close at 60,366.99.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.367%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.847%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ernesto Miranda in the lawsuit, Miranda v. Arizona, affirming that constitutional guarantees against self-incrimination include restrictions on police interrogation of an arrested suspect. In 1967, Thurgood Marshall was nominated as justice to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson; he became the court’s first African American member. In 1971, The New York Times began publishing the “Pentagon Papers”—a series of articles based on a study of the U.S. role in Indochina from World War II until May 1968; the papers added to the growing opposition to the Vietnam War. In 1982, following the death of his half-brother Khalid, Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud became king of Saudi Arabia, overseeing a period of modernization in the country. In 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung met North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in a summit that marked the first meeting between heads of the two countries, helping earn Kim Dae-Jung the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year. In 2005, after a 14-week trial, pop singer Michael Jackson was acquitted of child-molestation charges. In 2023, Donald Trump became the first former U.S. president to be charged with federal crimes as he was arraigned in a Miami courtroom; he pleaded not guilty to 37 felony charges that related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents.
