Tuesday the Dow fell 299.29 points (0.7%) to close at 42,215.80, the Nasdaq fell 180.12 points (0.91%) to close at 19,521.09 and the S&P fell 50.39 points (0.84%) to close at 5,982.72. The Russell 2000 fell 22.17 points (1.04%) to close at 2,101.96, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 503.40 points (0.84%) to close at 59,723.26.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.393%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.895%.

In 1873, suffragist Susan B. Anthony was fined after being convicted for voting in the 1872 presidential election, though she refused to pay it; in 2020 President Donald Trump pardoned Anthony, but the move was criticized by those who argued it validated her trial. In 1940, broadcasting from London after France fell to the Nazis, French General Charles de Gaulle appealed to his compatriots to continue World War II under his leadership. In 1979, the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) II treaty was signed by President Jimmy Carter and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. In 1983, the first American woman to fly into outer space, Sally Ride, was launched with four other astronauts aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
