Monday, the Dow rose 260.88 points (0.67%) to close at 39,411.21, the Nasdaq fell 192.54 points (1.09%) to close at 17,496.82 and the S&P 500 fell 16.75 points (0.31%) to close at 5,447.87. The Russell 2000 rose 8.78 points (0.43%) to close at 2,030.81, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 112.05 points (0.21%) to close at 54,320.42.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 23/32, bringing the yield to 4.237%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.368%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1530, the Augsburg Confession, 28 articles that constitute the basic confession of the Lutheran churches, was presented at the Diet of Augsburg to the emperor Charles V. In 1870, Robert Erskine Childers—writer, Sinn Féin deputy, member of the Irish Republican Army, and Irish nationalist agitator—was born in London. In 1876, George Armstrong Custer made his last stand with the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. In 1910, the Firebird by Igor Stravinsky and Michel Fokine premiered at the Paris Opéra. In 1943, the Smith-Connally Anti-Strike Act was enacted by Congress, giving the president power to seize and operate privately owned war plants when a strike or threat of a strike interfered with war production. In 1947, Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl” was first published, appearing in the Netherlands under the title “The Secret Annex,” it became a classic of war literature. In 1950, the Korean War began when North Korea attacked southward across the 38th parallel. After the attack the U.N.
