Monday, the Dow fell 12.72 points (0.04%) to close at 33,714.71, the Nasdaq fell 156.74 points (‎1.16%) to close at 13,335.78, and the S&P 500 fell 19.51 points (0.45%) to close at 4,328.82. The Russell 2000 rose 1.63 (0.09%) to close at 1,823.26 and the FT Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index fell 154.20 points (0.35%) to close at 43,611.61.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note fell 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.724%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged, bringing the yield to 3.817%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1829, English scientist James Smithson established the Smithsonian Institution. In 1862, during the first Battle of Gaines’ Mill in the Civil War, Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee attacked Union troops, driving them back in disorder and forcing them to withdraw to the south side of the Chickahominy River. In 1871, although the yen was first minted in 1869, the currency was adopted as Japan’s official monetary unit two years later, when the government suspended the exchange of clan notes, money issued by feudal lords that had circulated since the 16th century. In 1950, President Harry S. Truman ordered U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea. In 1985, after 59 years, Route 66 entered the realm of history when the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials decertified the road and voted to remove all its highway signs.
