The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index improved further in June, following gains in each of the previous four months. The Index now stands at 127.3 (1985=100), up from 120.0 (an upward revision) in May. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—rose from 148.7 to 157.7. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—improved to 107.0, up from 100.9 last month.

Tuesday, the Dow increased 9.02 points (0.03%) to 34,292.29, the Nasdaq closed 27.83 points (0.19%) higher, and the S&P 500 was up 1.19 points (0.03%) at 4,291.80. The Russell 2000 was down 13.50 points (0.58%) at 2,308.84, and the Wilshire 5000 decreased 15.03 points (0.03%) to 45,094.91.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, with its yield down to 1.474%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was up 2/32, decreasing its yield to 2.093%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1859, Jean Francois Gravelet, a Frenchman known professionally as Charles Blondin, became the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. In 1921, President Warren G. Harding appointed former President William Howard Taft chief justice of the United States. In 1950, President Harry Truman ordered U.S. troops into Korea and authorized the draft. In 1958, Congress passed a law authorizing the admission of Alaska as the 49th state in the Union. In 1971, the 26th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified when Ohio became the 38th state to approve it. The amendment lowered the minimum voting age to 18. In 1994, the U.S. Figure Skating Association stripped Tonya Harding of the 1994 national championship and banned her from the organization for life for an attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan. In 1998, officials confirmed that the remains of a Vietnam War serviceman buried in the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery were identified as those of Air Force pilot Michael J.
