Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week. On the same day, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the employment situation report, including the unemployment rate, for June.

Friday the Dow rose 432.43 (1%) to close at 43,819.27, the Nasdaq rose 105.55 (0.52%) to close at 20,273.46 and the S&P 500 rose 32.05 points (0.52%) to close at 6,173.07. The Russell 2000 rose 0.42 (0.019%) to close at 2,172.53, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 295.22 (0.48%) to close at 61,629.24.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 26/32, bringing the yield to 4.285%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.833%.
In the week ending June 27, the Dow rose 3.68%, the Nasdaq rose 4.07% and the S&P 500 rose 3.32%. The Russell 2000 rose 2.91%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 3.27% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1936, author Margaret Mitchell published Gone with the Wind, a sweeping romance set during the Civil War; the novel later won a Pulitzer Prize and was adapted into a hugely successful film. In 1937, the world’s first emergency telephone number (999) was launched in London. In 1966, the National Organization for Women was founded with the mission of promoting equal rights for women; author and activist Betty Friedan served as its first president. In 1985, swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympic athlete with 28 medals, was born. In 2001, musician and record company executive Chet Atkins—who was a major figure in country music, often credited with developing the Nashville Sound of the 1960s—died in Nashville. In 2019, while at the Korean Demilitarized Zone, President Donald Trump walked into North Korea to greet its leader, Kim Jong-Un, thus becoming the first sitting U.S. president to visit that country.
