Wednesday the Dow fell 91.90 points (0.22%) to close at 42,427.74, the Nasdaq rose 
61.53 (0.32%) to close at 19,460.49 and the S&P 500 rose 0.44 points (0.007%) to close at 5,970.81. The Russell 2000 fell 4.5 points (0.21%) to close at 2,098.48, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 11.97 points (0.02%) to close at 59,631.82. 

The 10-year Treasury note fell 23/32, bringing the yield to 4.376%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.896%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1944, in World War II, Allied forces entered Rome. In 1947, in an address at Harvard University, U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall advanced the idea of the Marshall Plan, a European self-help program to be financed by the U.S. In 1968, while running for U.S. president, Robert F. Kennedy was fatally shot by Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles; he died the following day. In 1981, AIDS was reported for the first time, following the detection of a rare form of pneumonia in five homosexual men in Los Angeles. In 2004, politician Ronald Reagan—who, as the 40th president of the U.S., became known for his conservative Republicanism, his fervent anticommunism and his appealing personal style—died at age 93. In 2012, author Ray Bradbury, whose greatest work was the dystopian classic “Fahrenheit 451,” died at the age of 91.
