In the week ending May 31, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 247,000, an increase of 8,000
from the previous week’s revised level of 239,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 235,000, an increase of 4,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 230,500.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.85% for the week ending June 5 down from last week’s rate of 6.89%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.99%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.99%, down from last week when it averaged 6.03%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.29%.
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday the Dow fell 108 points (0.25%) to close at 42,319.74, the Nasdaq fell162.04 (0.83%) to close at 19,298.45 and the S&P 500 fell 31.51 points (0.53%) to close at 5,939.30. The Russell 2000 fell 1.13 points (0.05%) to close at 2,097.35, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 277.97 points (0.47%) to close at 59,353.84. 

The 10-year Treasury note fell 25/32, bringing the yield to 4.395%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 22/32, bringing the yield to 4.883%.
