ON THIS DATE: In 1869, Ives W. McGaffey received a U.S. patent for the suction vacuum cleaner. In 1953, the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed segregated restaurants in Washington, D.C. In 1966, the rival National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL) announced that they would merge. In 1968, James Earl Ray, an escaped American convict, was arrested in London, England, and charged with the assassination of African American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. In 1968, three days after falling prey to an assassin in California, Senator Robert F. Kennedy was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. In 1969, the New York Yankees retired Mickey Mantle’s number (7). In 1982, President Ronald Reagan became the first American chief executive to address a joint session of the British Parliament. In 1991, a victory parade was held in Washington, D.C., to honor veterans of the Persian Gulf War. In 1998, the FTC brought an antitrust complaint against Intel Corp., alleging its policies punished other developers of microprocessor chips. In 2004, Nate Olive and Sarah Jones began the first known continuous hike of the 1,800-mile trail down the U.S. Pacific Coast. They completed the trek at the U.S.-Mexico border on September 28.
