Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.
MARKET MIRROR
Friday the Dow rose 443.13 points (1.05%) to close at 42,762.87, the Nasdaq rose 231.50 (1.2%) to close at 19,529.95 and the S&P 500 rose 61.06 points (1.03%) to close at 6,000.36. The Russell 2000 rose 34.72 points (1.66%) to close at 2,132.07, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 626.08 points (1.05%) to close at 59,979.92.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.513%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.971%.

In the week ending June 6, the Dow rose 1.15%, the Nasdaq rose 2.13% and the S&P 500 rose 1.48%. The Russell 2000 rose 3.09%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 1.64% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1870, English writer Charles Dickens, generally considered the greatest Victorian novelist, died at Gad’s Hill near Chatham, Kent. In 1891, composer and lyricist Cole Porter, who brought a worldly élan to the American musical, was born in Peru, Indiana. In 1940, Norway surrendered to the Nazis during World War II. In 1973, racehorse Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes (by an unprecedented 31 lengths) to capture the Triple Crown; he earlier had won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In 2008, baseball player Ken Griffey, Jr. hit his 600th career home run, becoming the sixth player in major league history to accomplish the feat. In 2011, the world’s first artificial organ transplant was performed. It was an artificial windpipe coated with stem cells.
