Yesterday, the Dow lost 166.15 points (0.49%) to finish at 33,892.60, the Nasdaq closed 56.78 points (0.41%) higher at 13,751.40, and the S&P 500 decreased 10.71 points (0.24%) to 4,373.94. The Russell 2000 was up 7.16 points (0.355) at 2,048.09, and the Wilshire 5000 was virtually unchanged at 44,259.36.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 1 3/32, bringing its yield down to 1.822%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond climbed 2 29/32, decreasing its yield to 2.152%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1692, in Salem Village in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne and Tituba, an enslaved woman from Barbados, were charged with the illegal practice of witchcraft. This began the Salem Witch Hunt. In 1781, the Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation. In 1790, Congress authorized the first U.S. census. In 1803, Ohio became the 17th U.S. state. In 1845, President John Tyler signed the congressional resolution to annex the Republic of Texas. In 1867, Nebraska became the 37th U.S. state. In 1872, President Ulysses Grant signed the bill creating the nation’s first national park at Yellowstone. In 1873, E. Remington and Sons of Ilion, New York, began the manufacturing the first practical typewriter. In 1932, in a crime that captured the attention of the entire nation, Charles Lindbergh, Jr., the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, was kidnapped from the family’s new mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey. In 1937, in Connecticut, the first permanent automobile license plates were issued. In 1949, Joe Louis announced that he was retiring from boxing as world heavyweight boxing champion. In 1954, five congressmen were wounded when four Puerto Rican nationalists opened fire from the gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order #10924, establishing the Peace Corps as a new agency within the Department of State. In 1969, New York Yankees center fielder Mickey Mantle announced his retirement from baseball. In 1971, a bomb exploded in the Capitol building, causing an estimated $300,000 in damage but hurting no one. In 1995, Yahoo! was incorporated. In 2003, approximately 180,000 personnel from 22 different organizations around the government became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
