Friday, total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 151,000 in February, and the unemployment rate changed little at 4.1%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.

Friday, the Dow rose 222.64 points (0.52%) to close at 42,801.72, the Nasdaq rose 126.97 points (0.70%) to close at 18,196.22 and the S&P 500 rose 31.68 points (0.55%) to close at 5,770.20. The Russell 2000 rose 8.93 points (0.43%) to close at 2,075.48, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 294.09 points (0.51%) to close at 57,564.80.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.301%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.600%.
In the week ending March 7, the Dow fell 2.37%, the Nasdaq fell 3.45% and the S&P 500 fell 3.10%. The Russell 2000 fell 4.05%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 3.29% lower.

ON THIS DATE: In 1913, in Toledo, Ohio, William Knox became the first bowler to make a perfect score of 300 in an American Bowling Congress tournament. In 1933, soon after Adolf Hitler became chancellor, the first concentration camp in Germany opened in Dachau, where at least 32,000 people would die from disease, malnutrition, physical oppression and execution. In 1969, James Earl Ray pled guilty to murdering American civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. In 2006, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter entered Mars obit and began searching for signs of water on the planet. In 2017, South Korean politician Park Geun-Hye’s presidency ended as the country’s Constitutional Court upheld her impeachment; she became South Korea’s first democratically elected president to be removed from office.
