Wednesday, the Dow fell 82.55 points (0.20%) to close at 41,350.93, the Nasdaq rose 212.36 points (1.22%) to close at 17,648.45 and the S&P 500 rose 27.23 points (0.49%) to close at 5,599.30. The Russell 2000 rose 2.87 points (0.14%) to close at 2,026.47, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 270.62 points (0.49%) to close at 55,865.21.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.315%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.633%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1781 English astronomer William Herschel observed the seventh planet from the Sun, Uranus—and named it for the father of the god Saturn. In 1881, Czar Alexander II was assassinated in St. Petersburg. In 1925, the Tennessee legislature passed a bill that banned the teaching of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution in the state’s public schools. In 2012 Encyclopedia Britannica, Inc., announced that it was ceasing publication of its print version, the oldest and longest continually published English-language general print encyclopedia. In 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, was elected pope of the Roman Catholic Church; taking the name Francis I, he succeeded Benedict XVI, who had resigned. In 2020, Breonna Taylor, a Black EMT, was killed by Louisville, Kentucky, police officers as they burst into her apartment during a botched raid; her death led to massive protests by Black Lives Matter activists and others who called for police reform.
