The Russell 2000 rose 6.23 points (0.30%) to close at 2,071.71, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 70.00 points (0.13%) to close at 51,964.80.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.194. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.344%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1794, inventor Eli Whitney received a patent for the cotton gin. In 1826, the first Pan-American conference convened in Panama with representatives from Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Central America in attendance. In 1864, railroad engineer Casey Jones was born in southeastern Missouri. In 1879, German American physicist Albert Einstein, known for his groundbreaking theories of relativity, was born in Ulm, Germany. In 1883, historian and revolutionary Karl Marx, who wrote (with Friedrich Engels) “The Communist Manifesto,” died at age 64. In 1899, German military official Ferdinand, Graf von Zeppelin, received a U.S. patent for a “navigable balloon”; the first zeppelin made its initial flight the following year. In 1951, U.N. forces recaptured Seoul during the Korean War. In 1964, during the first courtroom verdict to be televised in the U.S., Jack Ruby was found guilty of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, assassin of President John F. Kennedy. In 2004, Vladimir Putin, the intelligence officer and politician who became president of Russia in 1999 upon the resignation of Boris Yeltsin, was overwhelmingly reelected to a second term as president. In 2016, English composer and conductor Sir Peter Maxwell Davies died at age 81.
