Yesterday, the Dow increased 174.82 points (0.53%) to 32,953.46, the Nasdaq climbed 139.84 points (1.05%) to 13,459.71, and the S&P 500 closed 25.60 points (0.65%) higher at 3,968.94. The Russell 2000 was up 7.38 points (0.31%) at 2,360.17, and the Wilshire 5000 gained 297.67 points (0.71%) to finish at 42,198.01.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 2/32, decreasing its yield to 1.612%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 4/32, bringing its yield down to 2.359%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1802, the United States Military Academy—the first military school in the United States—was founded by Congress for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science. Located at West Point, New York, the U.S. Military Academy is often simply known as West Point. In 1883, Susan Hayhurst became the first woman pharmacy graduate when she graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. In 1915, the Federal Trade Commission began operation. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson submitted a $1 billion war on poverty program to Congress. In 1988, indictments were issued for Lt. Colonel Oliver North, Vice Admiral John Poindexter of the National Security Council, and two others for their involvement in the Iran-Contra affair. In 1995, NASA astronaut Norman Thagard became the first American to visit the Russian space station Mir.
