The Producer Price Index for final demand decreased 0.1% in February, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Final demand prices advanced 0.3% in January and declined 0.2% in December 2022. On an unadjusted basis, the final demand index rose 4.6% for the 12 months ended in February.

Wednesday, the Dow decreased 280.83 points (0.87%) to close at 31,874.57, the Nasdaq increased 5.90 points (0.05%) to close at 11,434.05 and the S&P 500 decreased 27.36 points (0.70%) to close at 3,891.93. The Russell 2000 lost 30.95 points (1.74%) to close at 1,745.94 and the Wilshire 5000 lost 305.42 points (0.79%) to close at 38,592.37.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note decreased 5/32, bringing the yield to 3.466%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 4/32, bringing the yield to 3.647%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1802, the United States Military Academy at West Point was founded as a training center for the U.S. Corps of Engineers. In 1926, inventor Robert H. Goddard launched the first successful liquid-propellant rocket. In 1945, U.S. Marines captured the Japanese island of Iwo Jima during World War II. In 1968, during the Vietnam War, U.S. soldiers dispatched on a search-and-destroy mission killed as many as 500 unarmed villagers in the hamlet of My Lai, considered a stronghold of the Viet Cong. In 1978, the Amoco Cadiz tanker ran aground and broke in two, releasing nearly 69 million gallons of light crude oil off the coast of Brittany, France; it was then the largest oil spill in the world. In 1995, Mississippi ratified the Thirteenth Amendment—which abolished slavery—130 years after it was added to the U.S. Constitution; however, Mississippi’s ratification was not made official until 2013, when the state notified the U.S. Archivist. In 2008, 85-year-old investment bank Bear Stearns avoided bankruptcy by its sale to J.P. Morgan Chase and Co. at the price of $2 per share. In 2014, Crimea voted to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation; Russia later annexed the region.
