Monday, the Dow gained 382.60 points (1.20%) to close at 32,244.58, the Nasdaq gained 45.03 points (0.39%) to close at 11,675.54 and the S&P 500 gained 34.93 points (0.89%) to close at 3,951.57. The Russell 2000 gained 19.10 points (1.11%) to close at 1,744.99 and the Wilshire 5000 increased 347.00 points (0.90%) to close at 39,109.85.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 3/32, bringing the yield to 3.486%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 3/32, bringing the yield to 3.672%

ON THIS DATE: In 1925, the Butler Act, which outlawed the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools, was signed into law; the legislation was at the center of the Scopes Trial, and it was not repealed until 1967. In 1960, about 70 Black African demonstrators were killed by police in Sharpeville, Gauteng province, during a protest against South Africa’s pass laws. In 1963, the federal prison on San Francisco Bay’s Alcatraz Island, which had held some of the most dangerous civilian prisoners—including Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz”—was closed. In 1965, civil rights activists led by Martin Luther King, Jr., began a protest march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced that the United States was boycotting the Summer Olympics in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In 1986, Debi Thomas became the first Black woman to win the World Figure Skating Championship. In 2006, Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey sent the first public tweet, which read “just setting up my twttr.”
