Tuesday, the Dow rose 401.37 points (1.03%) to close at 39,512.13, the Nasdaq rose 202.62 points (1.25%) to close at 16,369.41 and the S&P 500 rose 46.11 points (0.89%) to close at 5,224.62. The Russell 2000 rose 39.17 points (1.92%) to close at 2.074.88, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 525.36 points (1.01%) to close at 52,539.21.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.276%. The 30-year Treasury was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.455%

ON THIS DATE: In 1685, German composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born. In 1806, Mexican national hero Benito Juárez was born in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca. In 1880, German painter Hans Hofmann, an influential art teacher and a pioneer in the use of improvisatory techniques whose work paved the way for American painters to develop Abstract Expressionism, was born. In 1918, the Second Battle of the Somme began during World War I. In 1925, the Butler Act, which outlawed the teaching of evolution in Tennessee schools, was signed into law; the legislation was at the center of the Scopes Monkey Trial, and it was not repealed until 1967. In 1960, about 70 Black demonstrators were killed by police in Sharpeville, Gauteng province, during a protest against South Africa’s pass laws, part of the apartheid system of racial discrimination that would last until 1991. In 1963, the U.S. federal prison on San Francisco Bay’s Alcatraz Island, which had held some of the most dangerous civilian prisoners—including Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the “Birdman of Alcatraz”—was closed. In 2006, Twitter cofounder Jack Dorsey sent the first public tweet, which read “just setting up my twttr.” In 2017, Irish politician Martin McGuinness—a member of Sinn Féin, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, who played an influential role in negotiating the Good Friday Agreement (Belfast Agreement) of 1998—died at age 66.
