SURVEY SAYS: I admit that at times in my busy life I’ve only read the headline of certain traditional or social media content and assumed I knew about something in conversations with others. Sometimes, I learned that if I had read the whole story, my conclusions would have been different. There have also been times I’ve read a headline thinking I would get certain information, only to find the attached story included very little of what I thought it would. A survey Conducted by OnePoll in partnership with Zakat Foundation of America, a U.S.-based humanitarian organization, found eight in 10 people confessed they’ve reacted to an online article solely based on its headline. But most respondents (89%) disagreed with their initial reaction after reading the entire story. A headline can cause us to make assumptions or develop opinions; it can make us want to read more or pass a story by. This week, I’d like to know, do you trust headlines you see in traditional and social media, and can a headline alone make you want to pursue the bigger story? You can respond to this week’s survey by 6 p.m. Pacific time today.
