Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week. 
MARKET MIRROR
Friday, the Dow rose 32.03 points (0.08%) to close at 41,985.35, the Nasdaq rose 92.43 points (0.52%) to close at 17,784.05 and the S&P 500 rose 4.67 points (0.08%) to close at 5,667.56. The Russell 2000 fell 11.65 points (0.56%) to close at 2,056.98, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 26.18 points (0.05%) to close at 56,595.61.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 24/32, bringing the yield to 4.258%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.593%.In the week ending March 21, the Dow rose 1.39%, the Nasdaq fell 2.32% and the S&P 500 rose 0.79%. The Russell 2000 fell 0.90%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 0.61% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground, spilling some 11 million gallons of oil into Prince William Sound in Alaska and creating the largest oil spill in U.S. history up to that time. In 1999, a fire began in the Mont Blanc Tunnel, a major Alpine automotive tunnel connecting France and Italy; it took two days to put out the blaze, and 39 people were killed. In 2002, film stars Denzel Washington and Halle Berry became the second and third African Americans to win Academy Awards for performances in leading roles. In 2008, Bhutan held elections for the National Assembly, thereby completing the country’s transition to a democracy. In 2016, Serbian politician Radovan Karadzic was found guilty of committing war crimes, including genocide, during the civil war that followed Bosnia and Herzegovina’s split from Yugoslavia in 1992; he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
