Monday, the Dow rose 597.97 points (1.42%) to close at 42,583.32, the Nasdaq rose 404.54 points (2.27%) to close at 18,188.59 and the S&P 500 rose 100.01 points (1.768%) to close at 5,767.57. The Russell 2000 was up 52.39 points (2.556%) to close at 2,109.38, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 1,084.42 points (1.92%) to close at 57,680.03.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 7/32, bringing the yield to 4.341%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.671%.

In 1655, Dutch mathematician and astronomer Christiaan Huygens discovered Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. In 1807, the British Parliament abolished the slave trade in the British West Indies. In 1911, a fire at the Triangle shirtwaist factory in New York City killed 146 people, prompting the creation of health and safety legislation. In 1934, American feminist and activist Gloria Steinem, a leading advocate of the women’s liberation movement who helped found Ms. magazine in 1972, was born. In 1947, British singer, composer, and pianist Sir Elton John, known for both his popular music and his stylistic showmanship, was born. In 1957, the Treaties of Rome were signed, establishing the European Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. In 1965, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other civil rights activists completed their march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama; two previous marches had been halted by local police. In 2021, American children’s author Beverly Cleary, whose books included the hugely popular Ramona series, died at age 104.
