Monday, the Dow fell 649.67 points (1.48%) to close at 43,191.24, the Nasdaq fell 497.09 points (2.64%) to close at 18,350.19 and the S&P 500 fell 104.78 points (1.76%) to close at 5,849.72. The Russell 2000 fell 60.83 points (2.81%) to close at 2,102.24, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 1,107.18 points (1.86%) to close at 58,417.29.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.159%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.452%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1789, the U.S. Constitution went into effect as the governing law of the U.S., the date having been established by Congress. In 1837, Chicago was incorporated as a city, with a population of about 4,200. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated at the 16th president. In 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd U.S. president, and later he led the country out of the depression and to victory in World War II. The same year, government official Frances Perkins was sworn in as U.S. secretary of labor; she was the first woman appointed to a cabinet post. In 1989, Canadian jurist Bertha Wilson became the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. In 2009, playwright and screenwriter Horton Foote—best known for his adaption of “To Kill a Mockingbird”—died in Connecticut.
