In the week ending March 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 221,000, a decrease of 21,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 242,000, the Department of Labor announced. The four-week moving average was 224,250, an increase of 250 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 224,000.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.63% for the week ending March 6, down from last week when it averaged 6.76%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.88%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.79%, down from last week when it averaged 5.94%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.22%.

Thursday, the Dow fell 427.51 points (0.99%) to close at 42,579.08, the Nasdaq fell 483.48 points (2.61%) to close at 18,069.26 and the S&P 500 fell 104.11 points (1.78%) to close at 5,738.52. The Russell 2000 fell 34.20 points (1.63%) to close at 2,066.55, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 1,095.94points (1.88%) to close at 57,270.70.
The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.276%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.593%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1850, Senator Daniel Webster spoke out in favor of the Compromise of 1850, which was enacted in September in an effort to settle several outstanding slavery issues and to avert the threat of dissolution of the Union. The Constitutional crisis arose from the request of the territory of California to be admitted to the Union with a constitution prohibiting slavery. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for the telephone. In 1965, state troopers used nightsticks and tear gas to attack civil rights activists as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, during their attempted march to the state capitol in Montgomery. In 1987, boxer Mike Tyson became the youngest heavyweight to acquire the World Boxing Association championship belt when he defeated James Smith in 12 rounds. In 1999, director and writer Stanley Kubrick died in England. In 2010, director Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win an Academy Award for best director, for “The Hurt Locker.”
