January sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $663.9 billion, up 4.0% from the revised December level and up 22.4% from the revised January 2021 level, the Census Bureau reported. The November 2021 to December 2021 percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of up 0.2% to up 0.8%.

Tuesday, the Dow lost 184.74 points (0.56%) to finish at 32,632.64, the Nasdaq closed 35.41 points (0.28%) lower at 12,795.55, and the S&P 500 decreased 30.39 points (0.72%) to 4,170.70. The Russell 2000 was up 11.68 points (0.60%) at 1,963.01, and the Wilshire 5000 fell 198.78 points (0.47%) to 41,989.43.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 7/32, increasing its yield to 1.842%. The price of 30-year Treasury bond decreased 27/32, bringing its yield up 2.222%.
