Wednesday the Dow rose 141.74 points (0.35%) to close at 40,669.36, the Nasdaq fell 14.98 points (0.09%) to close at 17,446.34 and the S&P 500 rose 8.23 points (0.15%) to close at 5,569.06. The Russell 2000 dropped 12.40 points (0.63%) to close at 1,97664.12, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 44.00 points (0.08%) to close at 55,521.83.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.164%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.688%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1866, the Memphis race riot began as members of the city’s white majority attacked Black residents, 46 of whom were killed; the unprovoked violence helped to win passage of the Fourteenth Amendment. In 1898, the Battle of Manila Bay ended in the defeat of the Spanish Pacific fleet by the U.S. Navy, resulting in the fall of the Philippines and contributing to the final U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War. In 1931, the Empire State Building in New York City officially opened; for four decades it was the tallest building in the world, and it is considered a U.S. landmark. In 1941, Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane, considered by many critics to be the greatest film ever made, premiered in New York City. In 1961, the first major airplane hijacking within the United States occurred when a man forced a commercial airliner en route from Miami to Key West, Florida, to detour to Cuba. In 1999, the body of British mountaineer George Mallory was discovered on Mount Everest, some 75 years after he and Andrew Irvine disappeared while attempting to become the first people to summit the peak.
