Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week and the Census Bureau will report housing starts for April.

Friday, the Dow rose 125.08 points (0.32%) to close at 39,512.84, the Nasdaq fell 5.40 points (0.03%) to close at 16,340.87 and the S&P 500 rose 8.60 points (0.16%) to close at 5,222.68. The Russell 2000 fell 13.85 points (0.67%) to close at 2,059.78, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 52.14 points (0.099%) to close at 52,468.28.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 25/32, bringing the yield to 4.502%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.642%.
For the week ending May 10, the Dow rose 2.16%, the Nasdaq rose 1.14% and the S&P 500 rose 1.85%. The Russell 2000 rose 1.18%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 1.77% higher.

In 1940, British politician Winston Churchill faced the House of Commons for the first time as prime minister and told the members that “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” In 1941, singer and songwriter Ritchie Valens was born in Pacoima, California. In 1950, musician Stevie Wonder was born in Saginaw, Michigan. In 1960, a Swiss expedition led by Max Eiselin reached the summit of Dhaulagiri in the Himalayas, the seventh highest mountain in the world. In 1964, actor and comedian Stephen Colbert was born. In 1981, Pope John Paul II survived an assassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City, in which he was shot and seriously wounded by Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish national. In 2019, singer and actor Doris Day died at age 93.
